Carlton Mellick 2 - Biographical Abstracts
Each work is a riddle. Cryptically depicting a persons life through clues and codes. I challenge the viewer to determine the subject of each work. I first came up with the idea of a 'biographical abstract' about 12 years ago but could not produce the look I felt was needed. Then being heavily influenced by the works of Jean Michel Basquiat, I brought the elements together and began producing a series of these paintings. Riddle 4.0 is fairly easy. Scroll down for clues. Answer is at the bottom.

I added the image of Riddle 9.0 (Robert Leroy Johnson).
Scroll down to view it. I also added some detail images
further down too. Yes, I know I have revealed the subject
of the work. It will be for sale and is not going on exhibition
as some of the others.

April, 2012
One of my pieces, Riddle 8.0 which is a biographical abstract on the life of Irving Berlin, was selected for the Memory Play exhibition at the Herberger Theater Center Art Gallery. It will be shown from October through Decemeber, 2012. I was very happy to hear one of my works has been chosen for the Theater Center.

I have been very busy this month with other business issues but I did manage to complete four small pieces which have been donated to the Rochester Comtemporary Art Centers annual auction and sale.

I have completed eight works in the initial Biographical Abstract series. I will begin work on larger, 48" x 48" x 2", next month. Some of the subjects of these works are not household names. The intent is for the riddle to be difficult to solve althought these early pieces are relatively easy.
